Dear Wonderful Families,
Hello! My name is Shannon Geiger and I am so pleased and honored to be your child’s 3rd grade teacher. I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you as well as provide you with information about what is ahead of us this year and how our classroom works. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please contact me!
I am going on my fifth year of teaching. I have taught in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. I have a variety of experiences in all types of schools, as well as students with different learning styles. I received my Bachelors degree from Pepperdine University in California and my Masters degree from National University. I am certified to teach in multiple states and have taken many workshops and classes on reading instruction and differentiated instruction.
On a different note, I would like to explain our Friday Work. This work will be sent home with your child every Friday and includes papers from the past week. I ask that you look at your child’s papers and discuss with them their progress in school. I hope this will be an effective way of keeping you informed of your child’s progress during the year.
This year our class will be utilizing a class website. This website will provide both you and your child with weekly spelling lists, weekly Bible verses, daily homework, newsletters, important news and events, and more. It is important to look at the website every day to be prepared for school. Our class website is www.geigers3rdgrade.weebly.com. I highly suggest you bookmark this website on any computer you or your child uses. If you have trouble viewing this website, please let me know as soon as possible so we can fix the problem.
The beginning of the third grade year is very exciting for your child. This is the first year they move upstairs and are given more responsibilities. To help prepare for some of the changes, it is important for you, as well as your child, to be informed about what is going on in our classroom.
To start, make sure your child brings a healthy snack to school every day. Cookies, candy, and sweets are not acceptable snacks as this food item should provide healthy nourishment for your child. In addition to a snack, your child needs to have a water bottle at school every day. By providing a water bottle, your child not only stays hydrated, but it also helps eliminate class disruptions to get a drink of water.
Parent Volunteers are a great way to stay informed! Volunteering can take on my forms and not only benefits you, but also your child and me. Parents are always welcome in my classroom, and I highly encourage it! The more notice I have of your attendance, the better I will be able to utilize your time. If you are interested in being a room parent (mother or father), please let me know! It is nice to have someone to work beside to reach out to the families in the class. In addition to a room parent, I would like to ask for volunteers to take my lunch duty on Tuesdays from 11:30-12:00 and every third Friday. If you would like to volunteer in any form or fashion, please contact me and see the website for suggestions on how to get involved.
I enforce a Discipline Plan in my classroom. I use a magnet system to keep track of student behavior. Each week, every student starts off with 5 magnets. At the end of the week, if all 5 magnets are still in place that student is allowed to participate in “Challenge Friday”, which is our weekly dodge ball game against the 4th graders. Students can lose a magnet by not turning in work or showing undesired behavior. Magnets are not earned back, so once one is lost it remains off until the beginning of the following week. I provide warnings and reminders for students before actually taking a magnet.
Homework is an important element in our classroom. I will do my very best to make sure your child is not swamped with a ton of work to do at home. However, the volume of homework can depend on the behavior of the class during that day. I will post the homework daily on our website. Last year students used an agenda to write down the homework. This year we will not be using agendas, but instead move everything online to our website. If a student does not finish something meant to be completed in class it will become homework. If there is no homework for a particular subject, I will write “NONE” so you will know that I did not forget to write it in. From time to time, there will be additional projects and papers for the students to work on at home. Advanced notice will be given for these types of assignments. Here is what a typical night of homework will consist of:
- Bible verses, Spelling words, and Vocabulary words will be given weekly to be memorized. Our website provides the entire year’s list of Bible verses and even explains what type of test the students will be taking. The spelling lists and vocabulary words are also posted. The first 10 words of the spelling list will be required to learn for vocabulary tests. There will be a spelling test, Bible test, and vocabulary test each Friday, or Thursday if it is a short week.
- Math Homework- Every night students will receive a math fact practice sheet. Mastering math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and later division) is an important skill to accomplish this year. Fact homework might be oral or written, and requires a parent or adult signature to verify that the student was timed. In addition to math facts, book work or a worksheet will also be sent home for the students to practice whatever skill was taught that day.
- Reading Bags- Each week your child will receive a leveled reader to use as oral reading throughout the week. There will be different assignments to go along with the stories, but it is important to note that this is to be done with a parent/adult. This assignment is meant to be oral reading and will be read multiple times throughout the week. Please see the directions in the reading bag for more information.
I will do my very best to keep up with the grading. I typically have everything from the week graded and recorded by that Friday. This year our school is using a new program to input grades and other information. Each parent has the capability to see your child’s grades on “Parent Web.” Please utilize this program to be up-to-date on your child’s progress on specific assignments and subjects.
I know this is a ton of information to process, but please know I will do my very best to keep you informed. Please help me by daily checking our website and parent web. Please keep communication open between us. Working together as co-partners in your child’s education will make this year successful. Feel free to come to me personally with any questions or concerns or email me at [email protected]. I am so excited to start this school year off right. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of your child’s life. Please be praying for our school and our class, as we will be praying for you!
